If you've spent any time around a volleyball court, you've seen both camps: players with knee pads centered right over the kneecap, and players who pull theirs down onto the upper shin. Both sides are convinced they've got it right, which is part of why this debate hasn't gone away.
Preference aside, there's actual data on this from injury research, biomechanics, and basic product design all point in a fairly consistent direction.
What Knee Pads Are Actually Designed to Do
Volleyball constantly puts players on the floor as they dive, drop, and make defensive scrambles. A 10-year analysis of ED visits among high school and college volleyball players found the knee to be one of the most frequently injured areas in the sport, behind only the ankle and head, with sprains and strains as the single most common type of knee injury.
Knee pad design reflects that risk: the thickest padding sits directly over the kneecap on most pads on the market, because that's the structure built to absorb a direct hit to the patella. From a straightforward engineering standpoint, that padding only does its job when it's actually over the joint it's built to protect.
Why Some Players Wear Them Lower Anyway
The case for wearing pads lower usually comes from experienced players and coaches, and it's not baseless. Nike Volleyball Camps instructs players to step into a deep lunge and drop the torso forward instead of dropping straight down, which keeps them off a direct knee landing. Done well, that technique shifts the load onto the shin and the rest of the body instead of the kneecap.
The catch is that this technique takes practice to master. And due to volleyball’s extremely fast-paced nature, even the most skilled players still have to make imperfect dives.
Diving Technique Isn't the Same at Every Age or Level
A 7-year-old and a college libero are not making the same physical decision when a ball drops in front of them, and coaches who actually teach this skill treat that difference seriously.
Coach April Chapple, a former professional player and USA Volleyball High Performance instructor, is explicit about this in how she runs her own diving drills. With younger or less experienced players, she removes the pressure to execute a clean technique altogether, focusing instead on repetition and building comfort with the movement, getting players what she calls "zen with the floor" before technique enters the conversation at all.
That matches what other coaches teaching the skill describe. Volleyball coaches Danilo Arruda and Gylton Da Matta, who have written extensively on the sport's technical fundamentals, describe teaching a full dive as a deliberate progression spanning roughly two weeks of practice. In stages, they work on chin position, body control, and upper-body strength before a player attempts the complete movement. In their opinion, skipping steps in that progression is how players end up hurt.
Nike Volleyball Camps' own coaching material reflects a similar staged approach at a more introductory level, teaching players to step into a lunge and lower the torso specifically to avoid a direct knee landing. They lay the foundation before anything more advanced.
Put together, this is a consistent picture from people who actually run these drills: the "dive lower, protect the knee" technique is a skill that gets built in stages over months, not something a young or developing player has automatically. A player who hasn't reached that stage yet is far more likely to land weight straight onto the kneecap.
What Actually Happens Mid-Rally
Even once a player has fully built up that advanced technique, volleyball doesn't always cooperate. It's a reactive sport, and not every dig gives a player time to set up a controlled dive. Volleyball is about keeping the ball in play, and sometimes you have to put your body on the line to do so. That unpredictability lines up with the injury data: knee injuries show up across every level of play, and they're more than four times more common among college athletes than high schoolers, likely reflecting faster, more physical play at that level.
In those moments, the knee tends to be the primary point of impact, with the shin picking up a secondary role depending on exactly how the player lands.
Feel the Difference Yourself
This is easy to test without any equipment. Drop into a defensive position or a quick dig a few times. When the movement is controlled, you'll notice your weight spreading across your shin and the rest of your body. Speed it up, make it less controlled, and your knee takes the brunt of it almost every time.
That gap between the technique coaches teach and what actually happens under pressure is the whole debate in miniature.
The Real Tradeoff
At its core, this comes down to comfort versus protection. Pads centered on the knee protect the patella, which is the area at highest risk during impact. Pads worn lower can feel more comfortable and match certain controlled movements, but they leave that same high-risk area less covered.
Given how often volleyball produces exactly the kind of unpredictable contact that doesn't wait for good technique, protection has to account for more than the ideal case.
So Why Does the Debate Still Exist?
If knee placement is genuinely safer, it's fair to ask why so many players still wear their pads lower.
The honest answer is design, not judgment. Traditional knee pads sitting directly on the joint create friction, slipping, and discomfort behind the knee. Over the course of a match, players adjust for comfort even when it costs them some protection. The players aren't wrong to want comfort. The pads are just asking them to trade it away for safety, which is a bad trade to force on anyone.
The Next Evolution
